All the exciting live events you can watch for free this year on over-the-air TV

From the Super Bowl and the Kentucky Derby to the Oscars and New Year’s Eve in Times Square, there are must-watch live events on TV throughout the year. If you have an over-the-air (OTA) antenna connected to your TV, you can watch all of them for free.

Whether you enjoy sporting events, award ceremonies, special programs, or a mixture of them all, you might be surprised to find out how easy it is to view them live with nothing more than an antenna and your television. Learn about some of the top broadcast events for 2022 and where you can watch them as they occur.

Super Bowl LVI

Super Bowl 56 will be played at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, home to the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers. Although it is not yet known which NFL teams will play or who will sing the national anthem, the halftime performers have been announced. Dr. Dre, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, Snoop Dogg and Kendrick Lamar will all perform.

How to watch on OTA TV: You can view the Super Bowl on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2022, on NBC. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. ET.

Winter Olympics NBC

The 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing will begin on Feb. 2, with the opening ceremony set for Feb. 4. NBC will broadcast daily coverage as well as highlights during primetime.

How to watch on OTA TV: Beginning at 6 a.m. CT, turn to NBC to watch Winter Olympic events such as curling, skiing and hockey. The opening ceremony will be broadcast live at 6:30 a.m. ET on Feb. 4.

Oscars

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present the 94th Oscars from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Feature films released between March 1, 2021, and Dec. 31, 2021, will be in the running to win an award. Nominations will be announced on Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2022.

CMT Music Awards

Airing live from Nashville since 2005, the CMT Music Awards show is moving from CMT to CBS this year. A week of special programming and events will precede the program to kick off its new network home. The program is country music’s only entirely fan-voted award show.

Grammys

The Recording Academy will broadcast the 64th Grammy Awards live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas in 2022. Awards presented will include Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist, etc.

How to watch on OTA TV: You can watch the Grammys on CBS starting at 8 p.m. ET on Sunday, April 3.

Kentucky Derby NBC May 7

The annual horse race is the first leg of the American Triple Crown. Held at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, the Derby is rich in history and tradition, such as over-the-top hats and mint juleps. The 1.5-mile race is sometimes called “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports.”

How to watch on OTA TV: Coverage of the 2021 Kentucky Derby will begin on NBC on Saturday, May 7, 2022, beginning at 5 p.m. ET; post time is set at approximately 6:45 p.m. ET.

Daytime Emmy Awards CBS

The 49th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards are administered by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. The award program recognizes the best entertainment in various genres, including Daytime Drama, Entertainment/Informative Talk Show, Entertainment News, Game Shows, that air between 2 a.m. and 8 p.m. ET.

How to watch on OTA TV: The Daytime Emmy Awards will air live on Friday, June 25 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.

A Capitol Fourth

This year, A Capitol Fourth celebrates 42 years on the air. Celebrating Independence Day, the live fireworks display over the iconic skyline of the nation’s capital. It also includes a concert featuring well-known musical artists. Although the host and performers for 2022 have not yet been announced, last year’s lineup included stars such as Jimmy Buffett, Gladys Knight and Alan Jackson, along with music from The Joined Armed Forces Choir, The National Symphony Orchestra and more.

MLB All-Star Game

The best players from baseball’s American League and National League face off in the MLB All-Star Game. The 93rd edition of the game will be held at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. Players and fans vote for the players just before mid-season and the teams will be announced in late June.

Coke Zero Sugar 400

First held in 1959, the Coke Zero Sugar 400 is an annual NASCAR Cup Series stock car race at Daytona International Speedway. The Regular Season Finale for the NASCAR Cup Series consists of 160 laps.

Emmy Awards

The Primetime Emmy Awards is considered one of the four major entertainment awards in the United States. The Emmys are administered by three sister organizations: the Television Academy, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Each organization focuses on various sectors of television and broadband programming.

How to watch on OTA TV: The 74th Emmy Awards will be broadcast on NBC in September, but the date and time are still to be determined.

MLB World Series

The annual championship series of Major League Baseball takes place between the champion teams of the American League and the National League. This year, the series will take place at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. The teams playing will be determined in the playoffs.

How to watch on OTA TV: Although the date and time of the World Series has yet to be determined, it typically begins in October and will be broadcast on Fox.

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

The iconic event with giant character balloons, eye-catching floats, marching bands and Old Saint Nick himself has taken place on Turkey Day for nearly a century. Although the hosts have not yet been announced, last year’s commentators included Savannah Guthrie, Hoda Kotb and Al Roker.

How to watch on OTA TV: Although the parade details have yet to be determined, the broadcast will take place on Thursday, Nov. 24, 2022, on NBC.

Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest

Created by television personality Dick Clark in 1972, Ryan Seacrest took on the role of host of the New Year’s Eve special following Clark’s death in 2012. This year, to mark the 50th anniversary of the annual countdown, the show is expanding to four locations: New York City, Los Angeles, New Orleans and Puerto Rico.
